On December 6th, 2024, a key symposium on sustainability and carbon captation was held in Roeselare, West-Flanders. The event focused on CO2 compensation, reduction, and business collaborations to promote sustainable farming practices. It brought together local farmers, businesses, and environmental organizations to discuss innovative solutions for soil management and carbon sequestration.

Notable presentations included:

  • Colruyt Group shared their CO2 reduction strategies, including emissions tracking and collaboration with local farmers to implement carbon-sequestering techniques.
  • Claire CO2 emphasized the importance of local carbon credits and how businesses can collaborate with farmers to reduce their carbon footprints.
  • Natuurpunt (a BUFFER+ partner) discussed the crucial role of wetlands in securing future water resources and cooling effects, while D'Arta highlighted sustainable water management in their operations.
  • The event also covered new EU sustainability regulations and the role of businesses in carbon sequestration.

These discussions are highly relevant for BUFFER+, as they align with the project's objectives to engage stakeholders, including local farmers, in carbon-capturing activities such as rewetting peatlands. A local farmer shared insights into sustainable farming practices, including extended crop rotations and the use of wood chips to store carbon. The event concluded with a networking lunch, fostering new partnerships and furthering local sustainability efforts.

This symposium exemplified the power of collaboration in driving local climate action and sustainable soil management. We are happy to be part of this symposium as events like this gives extra attention to the BUFFER+ project.
